Cinnamon frosted banana bread 

Bananas do wonders for your body. Most of the time , they are misunderstood as containing a lot of calories and disregarded. If you’re avoiding bananas completely because you think they are too high in calories   for you , then this post might get you to reconsider. Yes , it does contain calories , but at 121 calories , one big banana is merely a tiny part of your diet. Saying this it keeps you feeling full for longer which is great and don’t forget the nutrients it comes  packed with.

   I personally don’t like bananas much but my family loves it. There has never been a day where there are no bananas in the house. To make this banana bread , I did not use just any regular banana but  one of Kerala’s most famous bananas – nenthra  pazham. I can write a whole post of how healthy this banana is for you but I’ll limit myself and share its health benefits briefly.

It is known as Ripe plantain in English.

History :  It was discovered by Alexander the Great , in the fertile Indus Valley. All sorts of bananas and plantains were discovered in the valley.

This plantain is often mistaken for a banana because they look very similar and belong to the same family.  Plantains are always cooked ; never eaten raw. When the peel of a plantain is green to yellow , the flavor is bland and the texture starchy. Once the plantain peel changes to brown or black , it’s high starch content changes to sugar. And that’s when it tastes absolutely yummy .  

Nutritional facts :

  1. It contains  a rich amount of fiber (17%), potassium ( 9%)  ,folates , niacin , pyridoxine , thiamine and  vitamins C (16%) ,  B6 , A , E & K.
  2. Total fat is only 2% .
  3. It aids with weight loss , kidney disorders ( helps naturally remove kidney stones)  , urinery and menstrual problems.
  4. Studies show that it also helps with problems like depression and elevates good feeling hormones within the body.
  5. It relieves anemia as well.

Some more details about the nutrients present to make you understand things a little better . This is just a summary of their important functions.

Folate :

  • Water soluble Vitamin B. 
  • Naturally present as floated or folic acid.
  • Enhances body’s metabolism , promotes and restores cellular growth.


  • Also known as Vitamin B3.
  • Plays an important role in the Energy production in the body.


  •  Vitamin B6
  • Increases the speed of the essential chemical reactions in the body.
  • Needed for normal brain development and function 


  • Vitamin B1
  • Needed for all the tissues of the body to function properly 
  • Helps turn food into energy (ATP molecules – they are energy currency of the body) 
  • Improves memory 

All these B – complex vitamins are necessary for the proper functioning of the body and for healthy hair & skin. 

Now to make the banana bread , you will need…

Ingredients : ( makes 1 bread loaf – medium sized loaf tin) 

For the bread:

  • 2 eggs
  • 3 very ripe nenthra bananas ( you can use any other banana as well)
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup canola oil 
  • 3/4 cup oats ( rolled oats is best )
  • 1/2 walnuts ( optional – I don’t like the smell of walnut so skipped it in the bread ) 
  • 2/3 cup sugar 
  • 2 tsp baking powder 
  • 1/4 tsp baking soda 
  • 1 tsp salt 
  • 1 & 1/2 cup flour 

(Note: 1 cup = 250 grams )

For the amazing cinnamon topping :

  • 1/2 sugar
  • 2 tbsp flour 
  • 2 tbsp melted butter ( which is about 20 grams)
  • 1 tsp cinnamon

 Preheat the oven to 350 degrees 

What to do , a PICTORIAL : 


Mix all your dry ingredients together and set aside .

Mix all the wet ingredients together in your stand mixer bowl and add the dry ingredients to it. Beat nicely but make sure you don’t over  beat the batter. ( sorry about the picture quality ) 


For the cinnamon topping , mix all the dry ingredients together . I added some ground walnuts to this mixture for added benefits.


Add the melted butter and mix.


Pour half the bread batter into the loaf tin and spread some of the cinnamon sugar. Add the rest of the batter in after adding the cinnamon sugar.


Spread the cinnamon sugar on the top after pouring in all of the batter.


Bake for 50 mins. Remove once the knife comes out clean. Yes I do know that it takes a long time in the oven but I think that’s perfect,  your kitchen will smell heavenly 😍 


And there you go , that’s the recipe for the healthiest version of banana bread. It is so filling , that one slice along with a steaming cup of coffee makes the perfect breakfast . I like to be a little unhealthy sometimes and have the banana bread with some cream cheese frosting ! This combo is bomb !
